Witness the live performance of ARRAY's LEAP artist grantee Francesca Harper’s THE RECKONING, presented in collaboration with Works & Process, at the Guggenheim Museum. Debuting in 2023 and featuring a score from music legend Nona Hendryx, this urgent, choreographed piece details Detroit Police Officer Joseph Weekley’s murder of seven-year-old Aiyana Mo’Nay Stanley-Jones as she was asleep on her grandmother’s couch during an ill-informed SWAT mission that was being filmed for a reality TV show.
ABOUT FRANCESCA HARPER
Francesca Harper is an internationally acclaimed multi-faceted artist who began her professional dance career with Dance Theater of Harlem, becoming a Principal Dancer in 1994. The vastness of her artistry and her passion led her to performances with William Forsythe’s Ballet Frankfurt, Dancing Pleats created by designers Issey Miyake and Gianni Versace for the 30-year retrospective of Miyake’s design work in Japan, and Broadway productions including Fosse, The Producers, All Shook Up, The Frogs, the Tony nominated treasure The Color Purple, and her first Principal Broadway Roles as Helene in Sweet Charity and as Judith in Sophisticated Ladies. Harper has received commissions and has choreographed works for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dance Theater of Harlem, Richmond Ballet, Ailey II, Tanz Graz, Hubbard Street II, The New York Choral Society, The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Black Dance Theater, and her own company, The Francesca Harper Project, which was founded in 2005. Harper also served as ballet consultant for the feature film, Black Swan, directed by Darren Aronofsky, and starring Natalie Portman.
Francesca’s mother, Denise Jefferson, served as the director of The Alvin Ailey School for over 26 years. Denise Jefferson created the Ailey/Fordham B.F.A program, which changed the landscape for young aspiring dance artists by providing dancers the opportunity to obtain college degrees while continuing to pursue careers as professional artists. Francesca’s mother was an example of courage and compassion for her daughter, and since her passing she remains a beacon of inspiration as Francesca continues to strive forward as a professional artist and teacher.
THE RECKONING’s live performance is supported by Works & Process and developed in Works & Process LaunchPAD residencies at Bethany Arts Community with the collaboration of Gabri Christa and The Movement Lab @ Barnard.
