Silent Movie Day at ARRAY presents a double-feature showcase of artists and activists, Paul Robeson and Josephine Baker in their feature film debuts. Trailblazers for Black actors of their time and actors who would follow decades after, we’ll show the moment where they first stepped on-screen with BODY AND SOUL (1925) and SIREN OF THE TROPICS (1927).
Directed by the groundbreaking Oscar Micheaux, BODY AND SOUL introduces the world to Paul Robeson as a prisoner on the run seeking refuge in a Georgia town.
Set in the West Indies, the French silent film, SIREN OF THE TROPICS, features the dynamic dancer and actress, Josephine Baker, as she falls in love with a French man engaged to be married.
